USA Learns is a free website that helps adults learn English online. This popular website, visited by more than 7,000,000 adults around the world, teaches English by providing engaging videos and educational activities. Learners have the opportunity to learn English independently or with the support of their teacher.
The website was built by the Sacramento County Office of Education, which is located in California, United States. Initial funding for USA Learns, which ended in 2008, was originally provided by the U.S. Department of Education and the California Department of Education. The Sacramento County Office of Education now has full ownership rights for the USA Learns website and receives no outside funding to maintain the site.
USA Learns is a joint effort of the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), Internet and Media Services Department and the Project IDEAL Support Center at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research.
Sacramento County Office of Education developed the USA Learns website and has developed many of the most widely used Web resources in adult education, including English For All, CDLP Adult Learning Activities resources for adult learners, and The Study Place. SCOE is home to a number of adult education and technology projects including the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (OTAN), and SCOE is nationally recognized for its expertise in the design and use of instructional technology in adult learning.
The Project IDEAL Support Center provides technical assistance to a consortium of more than 20 states working together to design and implement distance education programs for adult education. Project IDEAL assists members in planning, training, and evaluating their efforts. The Center publishes the widely used Handbook of Distance Education for Adult Learners and has numerous publications and online support systems to help states develop quality distance education programs. The Center has conducted national evaluations of many of the most popular adult education curricula, including Crossroads Café, Workplace Essential Skills, GED Connection, and TV411.
